Targeted CW-X Compression Socks Redefine Performance Socks Category
NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2009) – Athletes looking to boost their performance should be looking down at their feet. Competitors from runners to triathletes to skiers are increasingly turning to compression socks to give themselves an edge and recover faster in the process.
CW-X Compression Support Socks, from Wacoal Sports Science Corporation, makers of CW-X® Conditioning Wear (www.cw-x.com), use seamless, variable compression Torex four-way stretch fabric to provide targeted support (as opposed to simply uniform compression), to increase circulation in the feet and lower legs. A built-in Support Web™ (U.S. patent #5640714) supports the calf muscles and arch of the foot, and stabilizes the ankle joint. This results in reduced fatigue and quicker recovery from strenuous athletic activity. The socks have a cushioned sole and toe for comfort, a ribbed collar and arch-band for support, and feature sanitized, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties to reduce odor.
The socks will be available starting February 2009 at a suggested retail price of $35 and are available in black in unisex sizing.
Do they work? A study of compression socks in general presented at the 2007 American College of Sports Medicine meeting in New Orleans suggested that while there were no statistically significant differences in maximal oxygen consumption, heart rate or minute ventilation between treadmill runners who wore compression socks and those who did not, subjects in compression socks showed a faster lactate recovery rate after exercise. This study, conducted at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, suggests the socks might speed recovery after a strenuous workout or race. Similar results were found in a study conducted among middle distance runners in New Zealand.
“Athletes notice the extra support during their workouts and competition but some feel the benefit most by continuing to wear their compression socks for a while as part of their recovery regimen. They report having fresher legs the following day, which can lead to more successful workouts and races,†reports Wacoal Sports Science Corp. president and COO John L.A. Wilson, a former collegiate track athlete and Olympic trialist.
Wacoal Sports Science has been issued numerous patents for CW-X technology – 11 in the U.S., 16 in Japan and nine in Europe. CW-X has been extensively tested and proven in competition by Olympics medalists, cyclists in the Tour de France, and climbers on two separate and successful Mt. Everest expeditions.
