Team Ocean Kayak Brings Home Top Honors in Texas Kayak Series Tourney
Team Ocean Kayak, a compilation of top pro kayak anglers from the Texas Gulf Coast, recently captured Team of the Year honors in the Texas Kayak Series redfish tournament.

Corpus Christi, Texas (August 13, 2009) Team Ocean Kayak, a compilation of top pro kayak anglers from the Texas Gulf Coast, recently captured Team of the Year honors in the Texas Kayak Series redfish tournament. Captain Filip Spencer and teammate Vincent Rinando took home this year’s honors building on the team win by Clint and Cameron Barghi in the 2008 tournament series.
In addition to the team honors Captain Fil Spencer took home the 2009 Texas Kayak Series Angler of the Year award, while Ocean Kayak teammates Cameron Barghi, Vincent Rinando and Clint Barghi placed 3rd, 5th and 6th respectively in the individual competition. Spencer’s 8.12lb redfish was the largest redfish caught during the Texas Redfish Series finale including the powerboat division.
As gratifying as their accomplishments on the water have been Captain Spencer says it’s time spent with others in their community that really helps define Team Ocean Kayak. “Over the years we’ve held kayaking, fishing and safety clinics with a variety of groups including Heroes on the Water, an organization dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active duty personnel and veterans through kayak fishing, and the Youth Outdoor Adventure Ministry group.”
It’s this work that Spencer says puts the long hours spent on the tournament circuit into perspective. “To a member, the individuals who make up Team Ocean Kayak are as passionate as any outdoorsmen you’ll find anywhere and kayak fishing is in our blood,” says Captain Fil. “But to share this passion with others and to pass along our knowledge, especially to the next generation of anglers and those who have served our country, gives us every bit as much pleasure as winning any tournament.”
