Paralyzed Veterans of America named charity partner for sold-out October race
Washington, D.C. – Team REVolution (Racing to Empower Veterans) the multi-sport racing and fundraising initiative created by Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) is giving runners the opportunity to compete in this year’s Army Ten-Miler on behalf of over 60,000 paralyzed U.S. military veterans and their families.
Now in its 32nd year, the Army Ten-Miler is held each October in Washington, DC and is the second largest ten-mile race in the U.S. that sells out within a few hours of opening registration. Paralyzed Veterans will serve as one of the official charity partners for this year’s event which takes place on October 9. The race will start and finish at the Pentagon, just across the Potomac River from the headquarters of Paralyzed Veterans. Race weekend includes multiple events such as youth activities and events for U.S. military commands.
For over 70 years, Paralyzed Veterans has worked to empower and assist veterans who have bravely served our nation and, as a result, suffer from spinal cord injury or disease. Team REVoluion consists of able-bodied runners who take part in races across the country on behalf of Paralyzed Veterans. The funds raised at the Army Ten-Miler will support advocacy and services for paralyzed veterans, including research and development of treatments for those with severe spinal cord injuries.
“Since we started Team REVolution, we’ve partnered with multiple races and exceeded our expectations of supporting heroes who served and sacrificed in our Armed Forces,” said Al Kovach Jr., Paralyzed Veterans’ National President, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL who is also a two-time winner of the LA Marathon and a 1996 Paralympian. “Running with Team REVolution enables participants to take part in a cause that serves the greater community as a whole while taking part in a sport they love.”
Registration is currently open for runners to join Team REVolution at the Army Ten-Miler. There are limited participant entries available and Team REVolution requires that each team member must be able to meet a minimum fundraising requirement of $500. Runners will get training support from Team REVolution and all registration costs for the race are covered in the fundraising.
“I’d encourage anyone who wants to support a great cause to join Team REVolution and help Paralyzed Veterans in their mission,” said Kenneth Holman who served 26 years in the Marine Corps, including in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield before he was injured during a training exercise when his vehicle flipped and left him partially paralyzed. He was introduced to Paralyzed Veterans during his job search, and through assistance from the organization’s Operation PAVE (Paving Access for Veterans Employment) program was able to secure a position with Microsoft. Holman now currently works at Paralyzed Veterans of America helping other disabled veterans get the heath care and benefits they’ve earned, and he also stays active with the PVA Racing team competing in hand-cycling events across the country.
The Army Ten-Miler is produced by the Military District of Washington (MDW), part of the joint Armed Services initiative that protects our nation’s capital. Over 600 Soldiers from 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) volunteer during race weekend. More than 26,000 participants are expected at this year’s event, competing in individual and team categories plus an international armed services division.
