On the morning of January 31, 2018, Climb-On Maps began its Kickstarter to launch their latest map, the Joshua Tree Climb-On Map. Within 36-hours the Kickstarter was fully funded (and it continues through February)!
Large rock climbing areas like Joshua Tree, CA are known for navigation challenges, which can significantly impact the quality of a climbing trip. A few hours to a full day can be lost just looking for a climb. To avoid getting lost, many people end up going to the standard, easy-to-find crag, but then have to wait in line to hop on the rock. Neither scenario results in the primary goal of the trip, which is to climb.
Climb-On Maps fixes these problems by offering unique, extremely detailed rock climbing approach and walk-off maps. Here are the features that help climbers get climbing faster:
+ Maps have multiple scale levels and go down to scales of 1:1500 (compare this to regular trail maps which are typically 1:24,000 scale). Multiple scales allows users to rapidly orient to the area then focus on the details of the approach;
+ Numerous labeled orientation photos that are taken from the trail;
+ Terrain and vegetation features are included to assist with navigation (yes, we even put a single notable tree or bush on the map if it is a navigation feature);
+ Climbers can easily plan their day using the Crag Summaries. Crag summaries mark the location of each wall with color-coded charts that allow climbers to rapidly assess whether a wall will work for them. The Crag Summaries offer the most comprehensive assembly of crag data available and includes number of routes, distribution of grades, climb types at each wall, and the number of aid and multi-pitch climbs on a wall.
Additional useful features of Climb-On Maps include:
+ Durability – they are printed on waterproof/tear-proof paper;
+ Train information including difficulty, exposure points, and exposure level (i.e. broken bones, major damage, and rest-in-peace) so climbers know what they are getting into ahead of time and can plan accordingly;
+ Light and compact – For the larger areas, like Joshua Tree, CA and Red Rock Canyon, NV, the maps are on printed on 8.5” x 11”, 2-sided, loose leaf pages. Climbers can take only the 1-2 pages needed for the day. The Smith Rock map is 24” x 36” that folds down to a compact 4” x 9”;
Because of Joshua Tree’s long climbing history and variation in climb grades, Climb-On Maps has created special Joshua Tree crag summaries that also show the proportion of climbs rated at 5.7 and below (this is in addition to 5.8-5.9; 5.10-5.11; and 5.12+).
Now, with Climb-On Maps, climber’s can unlock the vastness that is Joshua Tree and easily explore off-the-beaten path crags.
The Kickstarter ends on February 28, 2018 and is offering significant savings on all maps. The earlier the participation, the more the savings.
ABOUT CLIMB-ON MAPS
Climb-On Maps was started by husband-wife team Stefani Dawn and Rick Momsen. To date, Rick and Stef have walked over 1800 miles, some of which was quite dangerous, to collect the data for these maps. Getting boots-on-the-ground data is the ONLY way to make a map like this.
Rick is a “mapping expert,” with nearly 20 years in the mapping industry as a Geographic Information Specialist (GIS). Rick is responsible for translating the GPS and terrain data into an attractive, visually intuitive, and usable map.
Stefani is the “Jack-of-all-trades” for the company, managing the business side, the website, social media, as well as identifying and labeling photos, and creating the crag summaries for the map.
Rick and Stef have each been climbing for over 10 years. The impetus for Climb-On Maps was the ongoing frustration of wasted time looking for climbs while on a limited vacation, and then being side-swiped by a walk-off that was more strenuous and terrifying than the 800’ climb they just completed. Because climbing is their passion and they want to help other climbers have awesome climbing experiences, they began Climb-On Maps.
