UCO Honors Heritage with Special Edition Candle Lantern™

Seattle, WA – July 10th, 2015 – UCO has hand-crafted their Original Candle Lanterns in the Pacific Northwest since 1971. The Original Candle Lantern™ has been a staple for backpackers and campers with its compact, collapsible design, candles that burn 9+ hours, and the warm, natural glow it provides at camp. Honoring the product that is at the core of their identity, UCO has released the Special Edition Candle Lantern. With unique processes that speak to UCO’s roots in manufacturing, the lanterns have a distinct vintage look and are built to last.

“When we first started crafting concepts for the Special Edition Candle Lantern, we looked into the UCO archive and pulled out all of the old Candle Lanterns that we had made over the years,” said Product Development Manager at Industrial Revolution, Peter Pontano. “We wanted to show off the hand-crafted nature of the work we do, and emphasize the simple, clean, useful design. The whole process was a lot of fun, as we really got hands-on in making prototypes of the leather sleeve, and mixing and matching different components.”

Appreciating the details of hand-made goods, the team focused on some special processes for the lanterns, including the lantern coating, a 2-step powder coating process that has actual metallic brass flakes in the paint. Once the paint is cured, each lantern tube is tumbled for 30 minutes to provide a vintage ‘worn-in’ look. UCO then teamed up with local leather stitching manufacturer Black Anchor Workshop to help develop and refine the leather sleeves.

In addition to the hand-stitched leather sleeve and special painting process, the Special Edition features an easy-slide glass chimney that allows quick access to the 9+hour candle, a candle-viewing slot that provides air supply, plus a hanging hook and handle. Production of the Special Edition Candle Lantern is limited to 2,000, and is sold in unique UCO packaging with hand-numbered certificates for authenticity, a sticker, pouch, and the “Stay Lit” patch.
