United By Blue Arrives Early at ORSM to Clean Up Local River

Every year, the annual Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake brings upwards of 30,000 people to the city over the course of a week. That kind of traffic certainly leaves its mark, which is why United By Blue has been coming to the show early for the last 4 years to help clean up local waterways. This year, United By Blue is hosted a cleanup of the Jordan River on Saturday, August 1st, partnering with Subaru and Backcountry.com. The Clean up, drawing a crowd of over 40 local volunteers removed 531 pounds of trash from the Jordan River.

Trash removed included a metal detector, homemade fishing spear, shopping cart, pair of leather boots, dealership license plate, and much, much more. Upon founding United By Blue in 2010, company founders wanted to instill a permanent culture of stewardship around healing our waterways and oceans. By associating each product sold with the removal of one pound of trash from waterways, United By Blue unites this mission with business objectives. United By Blue does not write checks or accept donations; rather the company fulfills the pledge through company-organized and hosted cleanups. Since 2010, United By Blue has hosted 120 cleanups in 21 states, with more than 4,000 volunteers removing close to 250,000 pounds of trash.

“For us, it’s more than sales. It’s about engaging with a community that is progressive, aware and motivated by improving our society,” says United By Blue founder and CEO, Brian Linton.
