SEATTLE, Wash. (August 16, 2018) — Seattle-based Mountain Safety Research® (MSR®), the high-performance outdoor equipment manufacturer, has introduced widespread updates across its tents and shelters for more resilient poles, long-lasting weatherproof protection, improved sun protection, and reduced weight. At the core of this year’s tent updates are the virtually indestructible Easton® Syclone™ Poles, and MSR’s ultra-durable Xtreme Shield™ waterproof coating, which lasts up to 3x longer than standard coatings.

“After a decade of research and development, the MSR team has developed superior tent technology that we’re proud to deploy across select 2019 tents,” says Terry Breaux, tents and shelter category manager at MSR. “With these revolutionary advances, MSR tents deliver unmatched durability and longer-lasting weather protection while keeping our customers’ packs impressively light.”

Advancing Tent Technology

MSR is introducing Easton Syclone Poles across select tents in 2019. Available exclusively in MSR tents, Easton Syclone Poles are built of lightweight, aerospace-grade composite materials to deliver maximum resiliency with minimal weight. Unlike aluminum and carbon fiber that bends or snaps under heavy winds, Syclone poles flex under force and bounce back to shape, maintaining the reliability of the shelter.

Easton Syclone Poles are the most resilient backpacking tent poles ever made, and the future of tent pole technology. MSR tent series receiving Easton poles in 2019 include:

  • Hubba™ Tent Series
  • FreeLite™ Tent Series
  • Carbon Reflex™ Tent Series
  • All-Season Tents

In addition to Easton Poles, MSR introduces its Xtreme Shield System across select tents in 2019. The Xtreme Shield System solves two fundamental problems that degrade a tent’s waterproof protection: coating failure, which causes fabric stickiness, and seam-tape failure. To combat these issues, Xtreme Shield combines a revolutionary, durable waterproof coating that lasts up to 3x longer than standard coatings and durable, precision, watertight seams. Together, they create a remarkably watertight system that ensures weatherproof protection far longer than ever before.

“Xtreme Shield is the ultimate coating to protect your tent’s waterproofness through heat, rain, and storage,” says Terry Beaux. “With it, you can count on your tent to deliver the protection you need, when you need it, for many seasons to come.”

MSR tent and shelter series receiving the Xtreme Shield System in 2019 include:

  • Zoic™ Tent Series
  • Hubba™ Tent Series
  • FreeLite™ Tent Series
  • Carbon Reflex™ Tent Series
  • Hubba™ Tour Tent Series
  • GuideLine Pro™ 2
  • Thru-Hiker™ Mesh House Series
  • Thru-Hiker™ 70 Wing
  • Thru-Hiker™ 100 Wing
  • E-Bivy™
  • Pro Bivy

Improved Sun Protection

Ultralight and compact, MSR’s minimalist shelters and wings provide excellent sun, wind, and rain protection of gram-counting backpackers, minimalists, and thru-hikers. Updated for 2019 with a UPF of 50+, MSR shelters and wings provide exceptional cover from the sun’s rays and other elements that’s light enough for one person to carry. 2019 shelters featuring updated UPF of 50+ include:

  • Rendezvous™ Sun Shield 120 Wing
  • Rendezvous™ Sun Shield 200 Wing
