Red Wing, MN – Sept. 8, 2009 – Vasque athlete, Duncan Callahan continues his epic season with a victory and new course record of 7:33 at the Grand Teton 50 mile trail race this past Labor Day weekend at Grand Targhee Ski area in Alta, Wy. This win is the third win of the season and a second course record for Callahan who is just coming off a third place finish at the Leadville Trail 100 only two weeks ago. Callahan began the weekend by presenting an ultra running clinic at the renowned retailer Skinny Skis, a Vasque dealer located in Jackson, WY.
“I was inspired by new terrain and the overall beauty of the Teton Mountain range” says Callahan. “Lisa and Jay Batchen and the entire team at Dreamchaser set up an awesome 25 mile loop course with roughly 5,100′ altitude gain per loop of single track and fire roads. The event was superb and I hope to be back next year to defend my title.†Callahan continued, “a huge congrats to Evan Honeyfield for his great 50 mile debut, he will for sure be a force to be reckoned with once he has more ultras under his belt.”
The Grand Teton race series is a participating Vasque Project race and was selected to be part of the program because of their dedication to service and community. A carbon free event, participants of the 50 and 100 mile races are mandated to volunteer 8 hours of trail maintenance prior to being accepted into the race. A total number of 568 hours of volunteer service were turned in by the runners for the ’09 Grand Teton Races. Additionally, funds raised from the weekends’ events will be donated to Teton Basin Ice and Recreation and Teton Valley Trails and Pathways. Vasque will give a donation to these two organizations as a part of their charitable program, Project Thanks.
Next up for Callahan is the Golden Leaf Half Marathon in Aspen, Colorado on September 26 hosted by the Ute Mountaineer and Vasque. This race is also a part of the 2009 Vasque Project.
