Vasque Partners with Red Wing River City 1/2 Marathon to Support Y-Pal

Local outdoor footwear manufacturer, Vasque, announces title sponsorship of the 2009 Red Wing River City ½ Marathon & 5k, as part of the Vasque PROJECT. All proceeds raised will be given to local YMCA program - Y-pals.

Local outdoor footwear manufacturer, Vasque, announces title sponsorship of the 2009 Red Wing River City ½ Marathon & 5k, as part of their grassroots trail running initiative, coined the Vasque PROJECT. The Vasque Red Wing River City ½ Marathon & 5k, scheduled for August 1, 2009, is one of the many running events Vasque has partnered with across the country.

Essential to the Vasque PROJECT is their philanthropic component, PROJECT Thanks. A match dollar initiative with race partners, the program is designed to drive awareness and donations to marquee nonprofit groups in local areas. As a result of PROJECT Thanks, Vasque is supporting many vital groups from coast to coast that are either working to protect wild areas or assisting children in many important ways.

As part of PROJECT Thanks, the Vasque Red Wing River City ½ Marathon & 5k will raise funds for the YMCA Mentoring program, Y-Pals. This program will be the recipient of all proceeds raised from the race, plus the Vasque donation. The much needed funding will help match individuals, couples and families with children in the community. Y-Pals typically serves children ages 6-13 from single parent families.

“The Vasque PROJECT is really about giving back,” says Vasque director of marketing Sarah Pitts. “Our goal is to connect with communities in a meaningful and beneficial way and being able to support incredible organizations like the YMCA in our home town is simply perfect. It is important for Vasque to get involved corporately, but on a community level versus just writing a check to a big national organization and calling it good. We were determined to be involved with an organization that supports our community here in Red Wing, our home base” continues Pitts.

“We are very excited to pair up with Vasque to provide support and donations to a great local organization,” states RWRC race director Wade Bergner. “Additionally, we are confident we will offer our participants and our sponsors an unforgettable event as both USATF Certified courses are quite scenic starting and finishing along the Mississippi River. The races tour through a quiet wooden natural setting, mostly shaded and even going over a couple wooden bridges over Hay Creek. Be ready for a grand finish with a home town feel.”

Each participant will receive technical race shirts, a great post race meal, first class medals for ½ Marathon finishers, and be eligible for random drawing giveaways. The top 3 overall male & female finishers in both ½ Marathon & 5k win a pair of Vasque Running Shoes (top overall relay team receives 2 pairs, 1 each). Top 3 age group winners in each event also receive race exclusive collectable Red Wing Pottery Pieces. The 2009 event has also added a 2 person ½ Marathon Relay that is expected to lift participation numbers event higher. The Red Wing Family YMCA will be in need of volunteer groups willing to help them host this event. If you are interested please contact them or visit the race web site at

Additionally, a trail running clinic, hosted by Vasque elite trail athlete, Dan Dehlin is scheduled for the Red Wing Shoe store days before the ½ marathon. Details of this event will be released once available.
