What has long been an active practice at VAUDE has now been officially recognized: VAUDE – the eco-friendly mountain sports supplier. On July 16th VAUDE was added to the European Union’s EMAS Register. At the international Outdoor trade show in Friedrichshafen, Antje von Dewitz, VAUDE Marketing Manager, accepted Europe’s leading environmental award from Ruth Schlaf, Consultant for Demographics and the Environment at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Lake Constance-Upper Swabia. This makes VAUDE the first European Outdoor business to receive EMAS registration. The Baden-Württemberg Minister President, Günther Oettinger, and Thomas Urban, CEO of the German Alpine Association (DAV), also took part in the ceremony. Both offered VAUDE hearty congratulations for reaching this ecological milestone.
In September 2007 VAUDE started the Eco Audit process that has now been successfully completed with EMAS registration. The company voluntarily complied with inspection by an independent, external environmental verifier in order to evaluate its current ecological stand and make a commitment to long term, specific environmental goals. EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) was established by the European Union and is designed to monitor and improve companies’ environmental performance. EMAS registration is initially valid for three years and is appraised and validated by an external verifier on a regular basis as stated goals are reached.
The VAUDE family business has always been deeply committed to social and environmental responsibility. “As a mountain sports supplier, we offer products that are used in nature. So it follows that the preservation of nature lays close to our hearts. We are very proud of our EMAS registration which is a tangible and measurable sign of our commitment,†explains Antje von Dewitz.
VAUDE’s commitment to the environment starts in the development and production phases. Ecological utilization and product recycling closes the cycle and attests to VAUDE as an eco-pioneer in the European Outdoor branch. Dr. Udo Ammon, certified EMAS verifier responsible for confirming VAUDE’s environmental management scheme, affirmed this as well: “VAUDE’s EMAS implementation is exemplary. Particularly impressive is that the commitment of all involved doesn’t stop at the company’s doorstep. It can also be seen in VAUDE’s innovative products and the company’s deep environmental commitment to nature.â€
VAUDE has been actively implementing environmental protection measures for many years now. A clear forerunner, VAUDE founded the Ecolog Recycling Network in 1994, and in 2002 it was the first manufacturer in the sporting goods industry to introduce the eco-friendly bluesign production standard. VAUDE has also been actively involved in climate protection by carrying out such projects as installing its own photovoltaic plants, participating in initiatives such as BaumInvest to support reforestation efforts in rainforests, and using natural, regenerative raw materials such as Tencel and Cocona in its clothing collections. Other exemplary measurements for sustainability: an extensive repair service for VAUDE products and outfitting the international UN Environmental Protection Conference 2008 in Bonn with recycled bags.
To receive and retain EMAS registration, VAUDE must comply with stringent environmental guidelines in all business areas. VAUDE’s strong commitment to its environmental policies can be seen in the company’s distribution of human resources. As VAUDE’s Environmental Management Representative, Jan Lorch, International Sales Manager and member of VAUDE’s executive board, ensures organizational and strategic implementation of environmental considerations. Under the direction of Hilke Patzwall, VAUDE’s Environmental Manager, a variety of task forces are working to put the company’s ecological goals in specific areas such as material sourcing and production processes into practice. Another task force made up of dedicated VAUDE employees implements ecological projects on-site at the company headquarters in Tettnang.
It’s not only the environment that profits from this commitment; VAUDE’s brand credibility is effectively strengthened as well. This is associated with higher profits for retailers as increasingly more people specifically opt for brands that take on social and environmental responsibility. We now have an image brochure available for your customers at the PoS that is full of facts providing a wealth of information on VAUDE’s ecological and social initiatives.
