VENTURA, CA– He was only 13 years-old when he shaped his first surfboard in 1961. In the mid-1970s on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, he stamped out a name for himself designing high performance boards that helped revolutionize the sport. His acclaimed innovation in surfboard design technology over the decades has led to him being dubbed the “Father of the Modern Longboard.” He is the real deal. He is surf icon and Walden Surfboards owner, Steve Walden.
And this month, Walden tapped Verde PR & Consulting as its public relations agency of record (AOR) for Walden Surfboards.
Verde will lead Walden Surfboards’ strategic and comprehensive PR plan that focuses on trade and consumer communications, including enhancing Walden Surfboard’s brand positioning and sales initiatives, as well as establishing Steve Walden’s surf heritage and legacy in mainstream media markets. Verde will also assist Walden Surfboards in developing a broad reaching and integrated social media program.
“With all the years in the surf and travel business we see the need to expand the direction of our brand,” says Steve Walden. “We think Verde understands our needs and goals and we are happy to be working together.”
Celebrating their 45-year anniversary this year, Walden Surfboard’s strong foundation of shaping the most advanced high performance longboards available lies with decades of innovation from Steve Walden. Designing and shaping his own, original designs that push the envelope of what is possible in innovative surfboard design has made Walden’s Limited Edition boards collector’s items among his international following.
What’s Walden doing when not mowing foam? Surfing. Though he competed briefly while growing up in Southern California, Walden returned to surf comps at age 30 and has been landing on the podium on a regular basis. If that’s not impressive enough, for more than 11 years Walden held the record for the longest noseride in competition history with an epic 25.5-second ride. Walden also continues to travel the globe surfing and speaking at seminars about shaping and surfboard technology.
In the early 1980s, Walden unveiled his sophisticated and super successful Magic Model with its radical rocker, down-turned rails and jet-fast Turbo Hull bottom contour. By melding some of the loose, forgiving features of the shortboard with the maneuverability and noseriding features of a longboard, the Magic Model is the ideal board for all types of surf. With the resurgence of longboarding in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Walden’s revolutionary creation was the pinnacle and benchmark for modern high performance longboards. Walden is also known for inventing the Wingtail, Shovel Nose and Rocket Tail/Wing Fin surfboard technologies.
And Walden hasn’t stopped innovating.
From long to shortboards, fishes, epoxy, foam, custom, limited edition, Wahine (women’s specific) and SUP boards, Walden’s shaping knowledge and design style runs through all their performance surfboard platforms. To date, Walden has shaped more than 20,000 boards. Walden Surfboards also has a classic line of soft goods.
