Nevada City, CA- Mike Mooers, Wicked Good Copy & Communications’ creative guru, minister of mojo, president, founder and only (in spite of the fact he says “we” in an attempt to make it sound like he has a crew of writers) employee, recently returned from the Outdoor Retailer trade show where he rocked the floor with his unique approach to self –promotion.
The approach? Let Mooers explain: “I can’t say it was something new. What we did is re-visit the box. So many folks have been outside the box in the last few years, that outside-the-box has become the new inside-the-box. And vice-versa.” Using this inside-is-outside approach, Mooers walked the show floor, approached exhibitors, and handed out business cards.
For those unfamiliar, a business card is a small piece of paper with an individual’s and/or business’ contact information written on one or both sides. They differ from other cards – Christmas or birthday, for example – in that they are much smaller, rarely fold open, and usually don’t have heartwarming messages written inside. Mooers, making a triumphant return to the show after kicking it homestyle a couple of times, launched his simple program the moment he hit the floor. And his approach to the approach had a real benefit – while walking and talking are two components of the card program, seldom do the two need to be managed simultaneously.
“Walking and talking at the same time? I can do it, I’m versatile, but it’s not a strength,” says Mooers. “As each booth was in a distinct, static location, it allowed me to stop the walking component at the reception desk, giving me the opportunity to shift into talking mode without the distraction of trying to keep my balance while moving. I could then hand off the card, take one from them, then shift back into walking mode.”
And does Wicked Good have plans for Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in August? “Nothing yet, but we will. We – I mean ‘I’ – am going to dive back into the inside of the box and come up with something totally not new and un-revolutionary. Watch for it.”
While the current program appears to be a success, the proof will be in the proverbial pudding. Without generating new clients, the cards lose their effectiveness, and are better used as bookmarks or for cleaning fingernails.
“Yeah, not getting new clients would be lame,” says Mooers. “We are the most dominating and excellent copywriting firm in the outdoor industry, and our business card program proves that we deliver the creative, focused thinking that our clients – and clients-to-be – expect from us.”
