ARLINGTON, Va. — Yoga Alliance, the non-profit organization dedicated to improving lives through Yoga, announces Saturday, January 23, 2010 as the date for Yoga Day USA 2010. A Yoga Alliance community event held in yoga studios, community centers, parks and beaches across the country, Yoga Day USA is an opportunity for Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs) and schools (RYSs) to raise awareness and change lives through the proven mental and physical benefits of Yoga. In the spirit of karma yoga, or service to others, hundreds of RYTs and RYSs throughout the U.S. will host free or low cost workshops designed to meet the unique needs of their communities. Many of these workshops will raise funds or in-kind donations for local charities.
“For over 10 years Yoga Alliance teachers and schools have been coming together to share the life- changing health and wellness benefits of yoga with their communities,” said Yoga Alliance President & CEO R. Mark Davis. “We are thrilled to bring Yoga to those who are discovering, rediscovering or continuing a yoga practice.”
In 2009, 344 Yoga Day USA events took place from Maine to California — a 144% increase over 2008. Thousands of Americans including the young and old, flexible and not so flexible, athletes and couch potatoes came together to stretch body, mind and spirit.
