The SNEWS team was so impressed this year by the number of outdoor retailers thinking outside the box, showing devotion to their community, and simply put, giving customers a cool shop to gear up for the great outdoors. Here are a few of our favorites:
Hometown Sports in McCall, Idaho

It’s cool because: it has a rich family history, certified boot specialists on staff, and it’s been thriving for 38 years.
The Hub & Pisgah Tavern in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina

It’s cool because: it offers craft beer on tap from around the country, and it has awesome location at the entrance to Pigsah National Forest.
The Mountaineer in Keene Valley, New York

It’s cool because: with only 850 year-round residents, it has stayed in business for more than 40 years.
Frugal Backpacker in Asheville, North Carolina

It’s cool because: it sells samples and out-of-season gear to keep prices super low
Sunflower Outdoor and Bike in Lawrence, Kansas

It’s cool because: it’s cultivating an enthusiastic outdoorsy culture in Kansas.
Repair Lair in Minneapolis, Minnesota

It’s cool because: it’s saving customers money and helping the environment by offering gear repair instead of just buying new.
Outdoor Gear Exchange in Burlington, Vermont

It’s cool because: it did a film series based on empowering women, it immensely invests in its staff, and it’s giving back to its community.
