The running bug is spreading quickly, and companies like Dick’s Sporting Goods are aiming to capitalize on the growing number of recreational runners with money to spend.

Dick’s Sporting Goods recently announced plans to open a small, specialty running shop called True Runner sometime this summer. Though Dick’s Sporting Goods’ representatives declined to provide further detail on the store and the opening date, a press release noted the store will open in Pittsburgh and will cater to running enthusiasts.

It’s not clear whether the specialty store will sell treadmills or other fitness equipment that can be useful to runners, but officials stated in a release that the store would sell footwear, apparel and accessories.

“We’re excited to announce our new retail model, True Runner, which will outfit local runners with the best running apparel, footwear and equipment,” said Joe Schmidt, president and COO of Dick’s Sporting Goods. “In our continued efforts to explore new ways to serve athletes and build upon Dick’s Sporting Goods already deep commitment to the sport in Pittsburgh, we believe that True Runner will provide a top-of-the-line experience to those who enjoy the sport.”

According to data from Leisure Trends Topline RetailTRAK report, sales of running accessories, apparel and footwear all have grown steadily since 2009. The most recent data saw a 9.2 percent increase in the number of units sold in footwear; a 2.6 increase in the units sold in apparel, and a 15 percent increase in the units sold in accessories.

Running enthusiasts who can best serve the running community, the release noted, will staff True Runner. Stay tuned to SNEWS for more information, as representatives promised more information closer to the store’s mystery opening date.
