REI revamps used gear site
Citing success of the pilot site, the outdoor retailer adds brands and product categories to offerings of online used gear inventory.

No, these aren’t items on Craigslist. These are listed on REI’s used gear site, which received a facelift this week, plus new brands and more product categories. The revamp also includes a series of member-to-member gear swaps.
The used gear service launched in October 2017—an online version of the company’s in-store Garage Sales, but open to more than members—offering lightly-used products for up to 65 percent less than buying new products and giving more people access to the gear they need to get outside.
“At REI, we believe a life outdoors is a life well-lived, but we know that the cost of brand-new gear can be a barrier to access,” said Peter Whitcomb, REI’s director of strategy and leader of the co-op’s used gear efforts. “We launched Used Gear Beta online last year with the belief that we could help get more people outside by finding new homes for pre-loved gear and apparel.”
In April, REI released a set of product sustainability standards to improve its environmental footprint and hold brands to higher standards. Customers can filter products by different signifiers, such as bluesign, fair trade certified, and responsibly sourced down.
