REI to relocate Silicon Valley store
REI will modestly shift its retail presence in Northern California this year, relocating its Mountain View store to a bigger footprint nearby.

After REI’s mixed performance in 2020—a year in which the retailer suffered large sales declines yet added 1 million new members to the co-op—the company has announced a slight shift in its California presence. Later this year, the retailer’s Mountain View, Calif., location will move to nearby Sunnyvale to take advantage of a larger retail space.
Expected to open its doors this fall, the new store will occupy the site of an old Toys ‘R Us near the intersection of El Camino Real and Saratoga Sunnyvale Road. The 37,000-square-foot space (which community members have long claimed is haunted) is 7,000 square feet larger than the Mountain View location REI plans to vacate. The bigger storefront will sell a wider inventory of gear, the company said, as well as incorporate “expanded bike, ski, and snowboard shops, and a new community space.”

“Our store team is incredibly excited about the relocation and eager to get more involved with the Sunnyvale community,” said Kirk Peterson, REI regional director for Northern California. “The Sunnyvale location will provide more than 1.4 million REI members in Northern California with the gear and resources to enjoy the outdoors in the South Bay.”
REI has more than a dozen other locations in Northern California, including stores in Berkeley, Concord, Corte Madera, Dublin, Folsom, Fremont, Marina, Roseville, Sacramento, San Carlos, San Francisco, San Jose, and Santa Rosa. The company is also planning to open a Santa Cruz store at the end of 2021.
The new Sunnyvale storefront will be located at 130 E. El Camino Real, less than seven miles from the current store in Mountain View.
