Outdoor Afro

Outdoor Afro meetup participants gather on a summit on a bluebird day with their banner.Outdoor Afro Outdoor Afro in a non-profit organization founded by Rue Mapp that aims to connect black people nationwide to the outdoor experience. With 80 leaders representing 30 states, Outdoor Afro hosts “meetups” around the country, which gather people together locally to connect with nature in their own backyards. Meetups include hiking, camping, biking, birding, fishing, gardening, and skiing adventures, and all events are hosted by trained leaders.

Outdoor Afro uses social media as a tool to generate interest in its local events, but also to change the predominately white face of the outdoor enthusiast by showcasing black people enjoying the outdoors. Through its social channels, Outdoor Afro reaches 50,000 people every day. Post by post, they are changing the narrative of who engages in outdoor activities.
