Club Industry 2013: Attendees happy show is back home

A higher number of attendees and exhibitors signal people are excited about the show returning to Chicago.

After a brief stint in Las Vegas in 2012, Club Industry returns to its hometown — Chicago — for the 2013 event.


Exhibitors, fitness professionals and media will hit the floor of McCormick Place Lakeside Center for the conference and trade show, which both kick off Oct. 24.

Attendees seem to be happy the show is back in Chicago, said Erica Stone, show and sales director. The registration for the 2013 show is outpacing registration for the 2012 show.

“Our audience is excited to be back in Chicago and the Midwest where so much business in the industry is taking place,” Stone said. “We are pacing well [with registration] — about 50 percent ahead of where we were last year at one week out from the event.”

Exhibitors also are excited the show is back home. Organizers have seen a 15 percent increase in the number of exhibitors at this year’s show versus last year. There are approximately 300 exhibitors this year.

“Club Industry is a fun show, and Chicago is always great to visit,” said Ryan Simat, vice president of sales for Octane Fitness. “Honestly, while we liked Las Vegas last year, Club Industry really belongs in Chicago, and its history is there. We’re looking forward to this anchor show being back in the Midwest.”

For others, they like that attendees of Club Industry are willing to place orders at the show.

“We are always pleased with the results we receive, and continue to receive, from attending and presenting at the Club Industry Show,” Steve Ayers of ABC Financial Service, Inc., said in a news release. “We are particularly excited about the return to Chicago, as this location has historically been our best show of the year. Attendees are qualified and motivated to purchase.”

Since many specialty fitness retailers have began to focus on light commercial equipment, attending commercial shows like IHRSA and Club Industry are good moves.

“They should attend in order to scout the latest trends and get in touch with the types of products and services that are popular — not just to commercial buyers, but their clients and the prosumer and personal training audience,” Stone said.

In addition to the equipment trade show, there will be a keynote speech by Bridget Brennan, author of “Why She Buys” and CEO of Female Factor, about how to appeal to female consumers. Also the CEO Summit, a small group symposium for fitness industry executives to share business content and discuss the future growth of the industry, returns for its second year.
