After years of discussing sobriety and what it means in the outdoor industry, Shannon Walton and Stacy Bare hosted the first sober happy hour in July at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. They expected maybe 25 people to show up, but more than 100 attended to network in the alcohol-free environment.
“Over years of conversations about clarity and self-knowledge and potential and capacity, we discovered that a lot of people we knew were sober but didn’t advertise it as it has such a social stigma- especially in Outdoor where everything seems to begin and end in beer,” Walton said.
Being different isn’t always easy, but Walton and Bare forged a new path that showed us and the industry that beer isn’t the only way to come together.
So when the Pale Ales and IPAs start flowing on the show floor on Friday, stop by our booth (#39089-UL) for something different. Brew Dr. Kombucha will be handing out bottles of kombucha and whipping up mocktails.
Grassroots Outdoor Alliance will also be featuring Healthy Happy options throughout the Connect show, and their app will highlight options for local yoga studios and gyms to support a Healthy Happy lifestyle while at a trade show.
“The bigger goal of all of this is that a Healthy Happy community has greater capacity to reach its full potential,” Walton said. “We are super excited that this idea has become a movement and hopefully it leads to more seekers.”
