It’s hard to believe, but in just a few short weeks the outdoor community once again will gather at the Salt Palace for Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. At OR, innovation is a guarantee in product manufacturing, booth design and visual merchandising. Every show has at least one stunner — and often many more.

If you want to get a leg up on the visual merchandising scene in outdoor retail, be sure to sign up for a Merchandising Tour led by Robin Enright, CEO of Merchandising Matters and Merchandising Editor for SNEWS. Merchandising tours are cosponsored by Outdoor Retailer and SNEWS, and are developed to educate retailers and exhibitors on specific visual merchandising elements and provide creative inspiration and ideas to take home. They are also a lot of fun!

Merchandising Tour stops identify one detail at each booth to demonstrate the value of individual merchandising elements and how these details layer on to the overall booth or display story. Exploration includes lighting, signage, use of color, flooring, display, materials and sustainability, engagement and experience and use of exterior walls. Tours help quiet the auditory and visual overload at OR by focusing on one detail at a time.

For context, here’s a look at a few of the stops of an ORSM 2012 merchandising tours:

Prana (

Repurposed sequoia mannequin stands were an artful addition to Prana’s new booth.

Solio (

Solio’s booth was powered entirely by solar energy captured outside the Salt Palace.

Message Factory (

Papier mâché mannequins grew straight into the booth story.

Patagonia (

Angled display was positioned the way people really walk, and jumped into the traffic with us.

Outdoor Research (

Exterior wall displays added elements from nature to tell a true outdoor story.

O Loves M Eco Bags (

An artful 10-by-10 booth was created on the fly with doors and windows meant for the trash.

Join us and see what ideas spur your creativity! Tours will be held Day 2 and Day 3 at 10 a.m. and last approximately one hour. Preregistration is required, so get your name on the list now:
