Forming the Plastic Impact Alliance with our friends at Catapult Creative Labs has made us all the more aware of our plastic use—reusable water bottles and thermoses line our desks and bamboo cutlery and silicone snack bags fill our lunch bags. Even more than before, we think differently about what we put in the trash and recycle bins.
Just this week, Patagonia joined the Alliance with plans to take their commitment a step further and inspire others to do the same. The brand “in business to save our home planet” is bringing an auditor to the show to track waste during the booth build and throughout the three-day event, with a goal of eliminating single-use plastic and reducing waste even more at the next show in November. They plan to share what they learn with the rest of the industry in the spirit of collaboration. Outdoor Retailer is also supportive of the initiative.

As of today, more than 630 individuals and 153 outdoor companies are dedicated to being mindful and proactive about their use of plastic and other single-use items at the Summer Market, replacing single-use with reusable and prioritizing reduce and reuse before recycle. They have pledged to have their employees sign the Plastic Impact Promise, host a water station and/or events without single-use items, bring their own and provide others reusable bottles or cups, and be mindful of waste at the trade show and at their facilities.
