You’re standing in line for lunch when suddenly, you remember: You forgot your bamboo set of utensils at home so you’re going to have to forgo your plastic-free values for the day. If only you had been prepared.
As so many of us prepare to head to Denver next week for Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, keep one of the big, industry-wide initiatives, the Plastic Impact Alliance, front of mind as you pack your roller bag.
Pro tip: Build yourself a “trade show kit” from the stuff you surely have at home, so you can be more mindful of everything you put in the trash during the show. Here’s a rundown of what’s on our packing lists.
Everything you need

Your essentials for a plastic-free Outdoor Retailer are probably already stashed in your cupboards and gear closet. Don’t forget to pack them before you head to Denver.
Drinking Vessels

Whether you’re caffeinating, rehydrating, or hitting up a happy hour on the show floor, avoid those pesky single-use cups and avoid collecting yet another reusable mug to add to your collection. Pack an insulated mug or bottle for coffee and water and a stainless cup for happy hours.
Straws

More than 500 million plastic straws are used every day and many end up trashing our precious lands. Every day more food establishments, schools, and now even entire states opt to ban them. If you’re someone who needs a straw, Klean Kanteen and FinalStraw are two brands that offer plastic-free alternatives.
Food Wraps and Bags

Snacks are a must-have for refueling on the show floor. Instead of using disposable plastic baggies, grab yourself some silicone bags or a few beeswax wraps to carry your granola and sandwiches. Bees Wrap and Stasher are two brands that offer affordable options.
Utensils

Skip the plastic cutlery with your airport salad, and bring your own set. Grab a couple utensils from you silverware drawer at home or go for bamboo cutlery like these ones from To-Go Ware. And of course, there’s always the spork from your camp kit.
Bags

If you’ll be collecting samples or catalogs or magazines, bring a reusable bag from home.
