Clouds brushing past the iconic summit pyramid, basecamp bustling with whipping prayer flags and blinking lights, headlamps moving up through the Khumbu Icefall, Namche Bazaar at sunrise, and the Milky Way so clear and pixilated it looks like an artist’s rendering.
Elia Saikaly spent two years shooting this 2 1/2 minute time lapse and he processed all the film at Everest basecamp.
Rocking out on Everest: Everest inspires a different kind of celebration.
“It takes a great deal of discipline to stay up all night capturing the magic for the world to experience,” wrote Saikaly. “Cameras freeze. Shutters freeze. Batteries freeze. Humans freeze. The high altitude environment is debilitating at best. Your body is taking a constant beating by the low levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. The higher you climb of course, the worse this becomes. And yet… this is heaven on Earth for me.”
