James Edward Mills has written for years about issues of diversity and inclusion in the outdoor space, most notably in his book The Adventure Gap, published in 2014. He has contributed to SNEWS many times—about the best way to approach DEI efforts in the industry, how to set the stage for true change, the differences between representation and tokenism in the outdoors, and more.

In this new video from InsideClimate News, Mills breaks down some of the ideas that have informed his body of work, diving into the history of discrimination in the outdoors and offering a vision for how we move forward as a community.
