For too many people, the threat of climate change is abstract—an arcane question of degrees centigrade, sea level inches, and CO2 parts per million. A new mockumentary by San Francisco filmmaker Sam Blakesberg challenges this notion by showing how a warming globe poses threats much closer to home. “The Kook” shows us what skiing might look like in a world without winter.

The film is goofy, yes. But it’s also clear-eyed about our current environmental reality. If we don’t fix the climate, winters will soon be gone—and skiing along with them.
